GENERAL INFORMATION:
The College of Arts & Humanities offers a variety of degree programs providing a solid education in the liberal and fine arts. Our programs of study lead to graduate and professional studies as well as directly into careers. The College is composed of two divisions: the Office of Fine & Performing Arts, which administers the architecture, art, photography, and music degrees and the Office of Humanities, which oversees the English, interdisciplinary studies, and liberal studies degrees.
ACADEMIC ADVISING:
Upon entering a degree program, students are matched with a faculty member who will act as their academic advisor during their course of study. Students are urged to meet with their advisors regularly. All degree programs within the College of Arts & Humanities require consultation with and the signature of the advisor for course registration. Reasonable and responsible alternatives are available, especially for students studying at a distance and during the summer months.
DECLARING THE MAJOR:
Where a degree program offers options (tracks and/or concentrations) within a major, students declare their concentration at the time of admission. The bachelor of arts in interdisciplinary studies has a unique learning proposal form which must be submitted within the first 45 credits of study. Applicants to the bachelor of arts in interdisciplinary studies program who have 45 credits or more must submit the learning proposal along with the admissions application/change of major form.
ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS:
Information on entrance requirements is found within the specific degree program descriptions. All degrees within the College require a high school diploma or GED. Aside from these minimum criteria, our associate degrees are open admissions while our baccalaureate programs are selective. All of the College’s associate degrees are designed to permit ease of internal or external transfer to the appropriate baccalaureate programs.
CHANGING MAJORS, CONCENTRATIONS, OR COLLEGES:
A change in degree, major or concentration may be requested at any time that a student wishes to adjust educational focus. These requests should be initiated from the college in which the student is currently matriculated.
TRANSFERS:
The College of Arts & Humanities, like the other colleges at UMA, has a liberal transfer policy which allows for the optimum number of transfer credits from a regionally accredited institution to be applied toward a UMA degree. Transcripts are evaluated in the admissions process, and that analysis is forwarded to the College as well as the student. A student may challenge the Office of Admissions’ conclusions. Challenges must be in writing and initially reviewed by a program’s academic coordinator, who will forward the challenge and a recommendation for the dean to act upon.
ADVANCED STANDING:
Students who have taken the Advanced Placement Exam for English Language & Composition, will receive credit according to the score attained as follows: a score of three earns credit for ENG101 (three credits); a score of four earns credit for ENG101 or ENG102W (three credits); and a score of five earns credit for ENG101 and ENG102W (six credits). Other opportunities for credit for prior learning are available at UMA. Students should contact the Office of Academic and Career Advising for details.
GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS:
In order to graduate from the College, students must be in good academic standing, i.e., not on academic probation. Any student who was admitted on a “conditional” status must have this condition removed. In addition, the following criteria must be satisfied:
- Completion of a minimum of 120 credit hours, with a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.00 for baccalaureate programs. Various degrees may have different credit hour, special projects, or GPA requirements, and students in those programs must check and conform to those specific standards.
